Stats show extraordinary season for Illawarra surf lifesavers

There’s still a few days left in the surf life saving season but figures show Illawarra surf lifesavers have had an extremely busy season from Stanwell Park to Windang Beach including the loss of seven lives.

Five people died at Hill 60, one at Woonona and one at North Wollongong.

Anthony Turner from Surf Life Saving Illawarra said there were 352 more rescues been between last September and this month compared to 2019/20.

“We’re looking at 497 rescues compared to 145 for the previous year,” he said.

Turner said all numbers were up with preventative actions more than doubling to just over 11,000 with 474 first aid cases.
